"The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" and "The Encyclopedia of Fantasy,"
John Clute at al. Exhaustive reference volumes covering just about every
subject, concept, and author in either field. Also "Science Fiction: The
Illustrated Encyclopedia," by John Clute, an oversize volume lavishly
illustrated in color, not as full of detail but great to browse through.
"The Mammoth Encyclopedia of Science Fiction," ed. George Mann. Three major
sections--authors, sf on video (film/TV), and terms and concepts--plus a
long appendix of Recommended Reading.
And just for fun: "Science Fiction Lists," ed. Mike Ashley (since become
famous as an anthologist in the Mammoth Book series) and "The SF Book of
Lists," ed. Jakubowski & Edwards.
