Romance Pbk Standing Order?
|

Since I cancelled Baker and Taylor's Paperback Parade standing
order for romance novels, I don't feel "on top" of the "best"
romances. I need to develop a steadily growing collection of
paperback romances (our library community is a BOOMING area of
Chicago suburbia).
Does anyone have a romance standing order that works well for
them? Or would I have a better collection by choosing "best"
authors as their books come out....an obvious choice in this
method is Nora Roberts (whose books alone would develop the
collection)....Any insights would be appreciated!
Romantically yours,

I don't use a standing order plan for romance paperbacks, but I have some
suggestions.
The first thing I'd do, if you want to build a quality collection, is to visit
the website of the Romance Writers of America, at www.rwanational.org. They
have two lists that you might find very helpful: a comprehensive list of RITA
award winning books for the last 20 years or so, and an honor roll of
bestselling romance authors. The 2003 Rita award winners will be announced July
19. I would definitely order any of those that are still in stock with your
wholesaler.
If you have more time, consider subscribing to Romantic Times for romance book
reviews and news. It's not perfect, but very useful.
I'd say browse your local bookstore, but my nearest big chain stores have
rather mediocre romance collections, and I don't know what your closest
independent store is like. Also, read the quarterly romance review sections in
Library Journal. Have fun.
