Could this be the series by Mignon F. Ballard, starting with
ANGEL AT TROUBLESOME CREEK? There is a guardian
angel named Augusta Goodnight who pops up in each book,
although the main characters are different. And she died
in the WW2-era, so she talks about rationing sugar, etc.,
and there are strawberry & chocolate smells ...
If it's not this series, you may want to check it out anyways --
several of our readers have really enjoyed it. It's a cozy
mystery series.
Another option is the Aunt Dimity series by Nancy Atherton,
which many people enjoy.
Hope this helps,
Lynne

My co-worker says that this is the series by Carolyn Haines. The character
is Sarah Booth Delaney and the ghost is Jitty, her great-great-grandmother's
nanny.

Sarah Booth (the heroine) lives on the home-place. Money is very short, so
she becomes a private detective to make ends meet. (This happens when she
finds her best friend's dog, who has been kidnapped. The twist is that
Sarah Booth did the kidnapping--to get money).
The ghost is Jitty, the "nanny" of her great-grandmother, who DOES change
outfits with blithe abandon, depending on what she feel like (and is not
limited to just her time--the "Barbarella" getup is a hoot!)
These are great, humorous cozies which give a great idea of the role of
Southern womanhood (who Sarah Booth refers to as "Daddy's Girls") and have a
wonderful sense of fun!
