Hello--One of our staff members is trying to remember author and title of a
short story or short novel that has the following basic plot: A young
deserter/soldier in the civil war is being hung from a tree over some
water. He gets away somehow and is then swimming and being shot at. Then
his neck snaps and the reader realizes that he was imagining his escape. The staff member was thinking it might be by either Stephen Crane or
Stephen Vincent Benet but she is not sure. Many thanks--Susan

Sue Sommers of the Anchorage Municipal Libraries swears this is a short
story by Ambrose Bierce titled Incident at Owl Creek Bridge. It was "one
of her favorites".Jane Baird

Thanks to those who identified the story about the Civil War soldier as
"Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. The staff member was
impressed, especially with the speed of response.--Susan
