The story is about a cat who goes to heaven. That's

That sounds as though it might be "The Cat Who Went to Heaven" by
Elizabeth Jane Coatsworth.

Aside from Coatsworth's wonderful book, which has a Buddhist context, your
patron may be thinking of Bishop (Edmund?) Sheehan's charming Magnifi-Cat,
which, not surprisingly, had a Catholic setting.
