I've liked Robert Skinner's Wesley Farrell mysteries. They take place in
New Orleans and are more gritty than funny (unlike Hiaasen) but like
Hiassen, Skinner writes a plethora of unusual characters, many of whom are
Black.

I just read the second Eric Dezenhall novel, Jackie Disaster (the first was Money Wanders, both satiric suspense set in New Jersey), and it again made me think that all the Florida satire/suspense fans ought to move up the coast a little. Very funny.

Christopher Moore's books would qualify as black humor. They are not really mysteries and have very wacky plots. There is a bit of sex in Moore's books though -- not sure how your patron would feel about that.

I completely agree with Karla on the recommendation of Christopher Moore for a patron who likes Hiaasen's dark humor. His latest, FLUKE, combines zaniness with mystery. Stephen Cannell's KING CON was also very Hiaasen-like in its mystery and humor. Corson Hirschfeld's TOO HIGH is one I don't remember well but did make a note that it may work for Hiaasen fans.

They all feature odd characters in whacky situations with a wry look at established values.

Fforde's THE EYRE AFFAIR and LOST IN A GOOD BOOK feature Thursday Next, a "literary agent" (think 007) whose job is to prevent changes to the timeline by book activists trying to alter plots & characters.

Bill Fitzhugh's work includes HEART SEIZURE and THE ORGAN GRINDERS (blackmarket donor organs); many of his characters are as outrageous as Hiaissen's hitman who had a chainsaw on the arm and treated his acne with whiteout.

Eric Garcia's ANONYMOUS REX and CASUAL REX tell of an undercover dinosaur culture in LA; the narrator is a dino PI.

Laurence Shames is another quirky Florida author. I've also had patrons who felt (and I agree) that Tom Robbins's oddball style is similar to Carl Hiaasen.

with a wry look at established values," you might peruse the book TO
SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG: OR, HOW WE FOUND THE BISHOP'S STUMP AT LAST, by
Connie Willis. This is a marvelous "time-travel" novel - a take-off of
the original THREE MEN AND A BOAT (TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG) (by
Jerome K. Jerome)- that manages to romp through a convoluted plot with
panache and high humor. Quirky, but delightful.

Ben Rehder's first book, _Buck Fever_ has gotten a lot of comparisions to
Hiassen (albeit with a Texas flavor). Definitely some quirky characters in
it. Also _Night of the Avenging Blowfish: A Novel of Covert Operations,
Love, and Luncheon Meat_ by John Welter might fit the bill as would his
other novels.

I haven't seen mention of Christopher Buckley (Thank
You for Smoking, Little Green Men, No Way to Treat a
First Lady) - black humor and oddball characters, or
Lawrence Shames - capers with a Florida setting and
usually misplaced goofy mobsters. Both were hits with
my Hiaasen fans, including myself!

Christopher Buckley is a great choice, Penny. I think that Happiness by Will
Ferguson would be a good recommendation. The premise...What if someone wrote

Well, if you're going to suggest To Say Nothing of the Dog for the
time-traveling readalike to Hiaasen, how about Terry Pratchett for the
fantasy equivalent? He's certainly got the dark humor, the quirky
characters, the oddball adventures...

Having never read Hiaasen (something that I am going to try to
correct this week), I'm not entirely sure if this would appeal,
but I would recommend Nice by Jen Sacks. The main character,
Grace, is just too nice to say no to the men who ask her out. She
doesn't want to hurt their feelings when she doesn't want to
continue the relationship, so instead she kills them. She meets
Sam, a Russian hit man, after he overhears her while testing out
some eavesdropping equipment. Chapters then alternate between
Grace's and Sam's point of view.
