Adult Summer Reading Club

What are your rules regarding what may be read for
adult summer reading clubs? Our brochure says "Read 5
books from the Orland Park Public Library" we do allow
audio books. There is some question as to whether or
not magazines should be allowed. Most of us feel that
only books should be allowed however, some staff
members feel strongly that magazines should be
allowed. The argument presented is that young mothers
are harried and hurried and reading a magazine is just
about all they can handle.
Thanks for your input.

I have to admit that I'd be happy if they read phone books and shampoo bottles if it got an adult to participate in our summer reading program! I gear my programs towards inclusiveness (read: making it easy) for adults because they are very greatful to be able to participate without feeling like they have to jump through hoops with an already too hectic schedule. Any time I can make someone feel at our library, I'll take it!

For good or for ill, this program spins on our circulation statistics - we
want to be able to show strong circulation when it comes time to do our
state reporting, and this program makes a big difference. We are a
community of 24,000, and right now, we have well over 600 adults signed up
for our program. It's very popular here, it has lots of rules and
restrictions, and, frankly, we like it that way because it levels the
playing field and feels "fair." Call me a cynic, but in the thirty years I
have lived in libraryland I have found that the more exceptions you make in
a program, the more people will find other exceptional things to demand.

We had our first every summer adult reading club this year. We allow one book - one ticket, Our One Book, One Community book is three tickets, and reading 5 books to a child is a ticket. We have weekly drawings and a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer. Almost all prizes came willingly from local merchants. We also received nice support from our Friends. All in all it has been very successful! And it hasn't cost us anything except man-power. We are also compiling titles so we can make a bibliography of all the books read this summer by our patrons. If you have any questions, ask.

We are doing our first summer reading program for adults this summer,
and we're trying to make it as easy as possible for all concerned. We
are asking that patrons either read or listen to books, but are not
restricting them to our books, nor are we asking whether audiobooks are
unabridged or not. We are not even asking them to register! All they
have to do is fill out a form for each book they read or listen to, and
each form they turn in is eligible for our final grand prize drawing.
The form includes the following info:
Name
Phone #
Title
Author
Comments (and we added the sentence: "Your comments, if you wish to make
any, may be helpful in recommending this book to others")
"This is the __ (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) book I have read. After you read
5 books you will have earned a small prize!"
"The Romeo District Library will be compiling a list of titles of "What
We Read This Summer" for all patrons' future reading."
Our theme is Laugh Out Loud at Your Library, and I also compiled a
humorous bibliography, but patrons can read or listen to anything they
want.
Hope this helps!
Take care!

REC'D: 6/28/03, 10:42 AM
We made our Reading Club very easy this year and we are getting great
response. The past 3 years we asked them to read from categories. They had
to read 5 books total (4 from specific categories and one of their choice).
Then those who completed the 5 put their card into a final drawing for
prizes related to the theme.
This year time was tight, staff was sparse (we've had some cutbacks) and $$
everywhere were thin (thus asking for donations of bigger prizes seemed like
an impossible task).
So we have no categories. They can read our books, books they have
purchased, books they have at home. Except for a few everyone reads library
books. But we increased the number of books they need to read (or listen
to). We ended up calling the program "Good to the Last Page" -a great
suggestion from a fiction-l member- so our "theme" is coffee. Each patron
who joins gets a coffee card and as they read a book we punch out one of the
8 little coffee cups pictured on the card. When the card is filled it will
go into a drawing at the end for coffee cups (some donations, some
purchases), bookbags (freebies from Demco) and t-shirts (donations from some
of the coffee shops in town). We also have a weekly drawing for drink
certificates from coffee shops in the community (about 10 shops are
participating). The customer only has to do a brief 2 line review of the
book on an entry slip to be part of the weekly drawing. No restrictions on
what to read, they can fill as many punch cards as they can read and the
reviews will be put into a "what we read" list later. The patrons love it
and we had to get more cards reprinted because so many want to join.

We allow books, audio books from our collection, the patron's collection
or any other source. We do not allow magazines (though we do not state
this). At one time we did state that participants could not count books
read to children. This year I decided to leave that out as I think my
patrons understand the scope of the program. Anyway, it's summer and the
less rules the better. I just want our adult patrons to have as much fun
as the kids and to enjoy their leisure time reading.

Due to popular demand we have inserted this line in our staff instructions (it is not in the ASRP brochure):
If a patron would like to include their children's read-aloud books in the ASRP, they can count 10 children's for 1 adult book. This means that they still have to read one adult book.
It so happens that parents have to read 40 books to their children for our read-to-me club. They have to read or listen to 5 books for the ASRP. We have never been asked about magazines, so fortunately we have never discussed this. We have a don't ask, don't tell procedure about where the books have come from.

Of course, just to be difficult, I might point out that some magazines
have much more wordage to them than many books, and in some cases the
dividing line is iffy. The recently noted MCSWEENEY'S MAMMOTH
TREASURY OF THRILLING TALES, for example, is a trade pb anthology
which is also issue #10 of MCSWEENEY'S MAGAZINE. There area a number
of literary/little magazines like GRANTA (and, for that matter, a
number of genre fiction magazines like BLACK GATE) whose wordage
(and often whose quality) matches or exceeds that of many books.

I can imagine special, limited circumstances in which it would make sense to select specific stories from a periodical. For example, John Grisham's novel "A Painted House" was printed serially in The Oxford American a year or more before it was published in book form. Impatient Grisham fans might not have wanted to wait. Or, if you had a group with specialized interests who wanted to read the work of old pulp-fictioneers like E.S. Dellinger of "Railroad Magazine" whose work was never published in book form, there would be little choice but to distribute copies from the magazine. (Assuming, of course, that you could find copies, and that their brittle pages survived the photocopier....)
A group reading from current issues of the magazine might be interesting, but it would be more of a current-events discussion group rather than a "book" or "fiction" discussion group.
