short story in grammar school reader

Back in the early sixties, when I was in grammar school, we were issued
readers that contained various short stories, some well-known - The red
pony by Steinbeck for example. In one of these collections was a story
set in an air traffic control tower. The controller was trying to "talk
down" an amateur pilot through a thick cloud cover. The pilot, flying
with his young son, was afraid of descending through the clouds, yet was
also running out of gas (I think). The story ends badly; the pilot cannot
overcome his fear and the controller loses contact with the plane. It's a
story that comes to mind now and again and I have no idea of the title or
author, whether it was well known or even one written specifically for
the reader.
Does this ring a bell with anyone? I can't think of a better group to
ask!
thanks, Susan
