THE LAST KASHMIRI ROSE: MURDER AND MYSTERY IN THE FINAL DAYS OF THE RAJ
by Barbara Cleverly. In an impressive debut, British author Cleverly weaves an
engrossing tale of serial murder and the impending decline of the British
Empire into a well-written fair-play mystery set in 1920s India. 2002. 288 pp.
ROSE OF TIBET by Lionel Davidson. It is 1949. Charles Houston's London life is
unraveling. What's worse, his brother, who had gone to India to shoot a film
about Everest, has been missing for weeks. On impulse he decides to travel to
India to learn the truth about his brother, to right a wrong, and to enjoy a
taste of adventure. He ends up captive in a bizarre Shangri-la, from which he
must escape bearing a treasure beyond price. 328 pp. (1962)

See if any library near you (I don't know where you're located) has
Allen J. Hubin's CRIME FICTION II or the later (cdrom only) edition
CRIME FICTION III. We don't have CFIII, but the "settings index"
on page 1251 of CFII lists about 150 mysteries set in India (and
published in English prior to 1991); there are also separate listings
on other pages in the setting index for those set specifically in
Bombay, Calcutta, New Delhi, and "Indian Ocean" (8 titles).
Far too many to type in here, but if no one near you has the set,
I could send you photocopy if I had a mailing address.
Hubin (who is local) uses my library regularly; he's working on a
new and final edition which will extend coverage up through 2000,
to be published soon both on cdrom and in hardcopy. After that,
it's someone else's problem to update further...

This being more of a spy thriller than a mystery, you might also consider a
classic: Kipling's "Kim," which, of course, is about "The Great Game" of
espionage between England and Russia.
