Dear group--
A local teacher needs a feature film "about someone who
learns about self-esteem." The movie will be shown to a high school
psychology class at a Christian school. Her preference is for an older
film--and it is essential that the content be "clean."

I thought of a couple of titles and found one or two more by searching
the IMDB and Allmovie dabatases by keyword. Current contenders are:

Glory (rated R! It's violent...I can't remember if it has cussing or
"adult situations.")
Jane Eyre
Little Women
David Copperfield

I'm not sure that any of these really fits the bill. I must be missing
some obvious choices. I have faith that Fiction-l will come through!

Although it has been some years since I saw the film,
I remember that "Educating Rita" with Michael Caine
and Julie Walters showed a great change in Rita when
she furthered her education. Perhaps someone who has
seen this more recently can remark on it.

What about "Now Voyager" with Bettie Davis? If I remember correctly the
heroine not only 'improves' her self esteem ( she lost weight, strengthened
her character, improved her appearance) but she also worked wonders with an
insecure child. I don't think there was any cussing in this one or sexual
situations. Maybe too much of a 'chick flick'??

Places in the Heart starring Sally Fields is a great one. After her husband
dies, she takes on planting and bringing in the cotton crop on her own,
something unheard of for a woman in the 1930's. Not only does she realize
her own self-worth, but her African-American and blind boarders also have
their own self-esteem boosted.

No sexual situations or profanity as far as a I remember. Some violence,
though. Be sure to pack a hanky!

What about "Now Voyager" (1942)? Bette Davis is a really insecure woman,
browbeaten by her mother and mocked by her relatives. She has a "nervous
breakdown", goes to a sanitorium run by Claude Rains, and gets well (and
stylish). She goes on a cruise, falls in love with Paul Henreid, and makes
major changes in her life. This is a wonderful film about change and new
beginnings in our lives.

They are not necessarily older films, but "Dead Poet's Society," "Renaissance
Man," "Rudy", and "Finding Forrester" all have self-esteem themes. There is cursing in
some of them, think PG or PG-13 characters. They may be worth a pre-screening. "Rudy"
may be the best choice of the bunch.

Man from Snowy River:
"Horse roundups, romance and a family feud on the Australian Fontier
in the 1880s." (PG)

Strictly Ballroom:
"A championship ballroom dancer who's breaking all the rules and his
ugly duckling dancing partner make their dreams come true together."

If you would like to add a couple more titles to your list of "clean"
films with self-esteem theme, I would add "A Lesson Before Dying" and
"To Kill a Mockingbird." Also, there is an educational (edited) version
of "Glory" that eliminates some of the worst violence. Maybe not PC,
but it is still a remarkable story and great movie.
