If any Tolkien fanciers have a twisted sense of hmor, may i suggest:
GRUNTS by Mary Gentle, a self-described "fantasy with an attitude
this is an Orc's-eye view of the Tolkien world..not only Orcs, but a group
that have gotten into a secret hoard of mundane weaponry and take on the
attitudes of Marines (hence the double-entendre of the title, I guess). The
only halflings we see much of are a pair of treacherous (though talented)
thieves and their domintrix prositute mother. It's actually quite
funny..but hen I grew up on Charles Addams...
