>>Can any of you verify the rumour that John Grisham did not write "A
Painted House" but that a ghost writer did? Do you know where I can get a
print source telling me this?>>
I'm very curious as to what your source is for this rumor.
A Painted House was originally published in serial format in the Oxford
American, starting with the January/February 2000 issue, and was illustrated
by Adam Gustavson. Grisham heavily promoted it at the time, claiming that
it gave him an opportunity to write something semi-autobiographical and out
of his genre, that it didn't interfere with his contract with Doubleday,
plus it helped promote a struggling Southern literary magazine. It wasn't
published in book form until almost a year later.
In several interviews over the past year or two, the impression I got was
that Grisham has grown weary of writing legal fiction but is contractually
obliged to do so (and is crying all the way to the bank.) He has spoken
about writing A Painted House in almost a reverential manner, so unless he
is an actor in addition to being a writer, I'd be very surprised if he had a
ghost writer on that project.
Then again, I still believe in Santa Claus.
