I am going to be doing a website later this semester for a YA lit class on
Pullman readalikes, esp His Dark Materials books, so I am really
interested in all the responses

I have only read the His Dark Materials series by Pullman, but I would
highly recommend a similar series by Garth Nix. There are currently two
books (Sabriel and Lirael) and a third due out this month (title is
Abhorsen). The trilogy deals with a fantasy world that shares a border with
ours, and the great magicians called Abhorsens who protect both worlds from
the depredations of the Dead. They are wonderful, exciting reads with a bit
of romance and darkness, and Lirael in the second novel is a librarian!
