I believe the story your patron is looking for is in Leaving home: a collection of Lake Wobegon stories. The story is called Du, Du, Liegst Mir im Herzon. Gene and Lois Pfleiderscheidt have a dinner dance for their golden wedding anniversary. Starts on p. 225 in my copy.
