Audio books are very popular in our library as many of our patrons have a
45 minute commute to work everyday. Both cassette and CD books check out
regularly, and now I'm wondering about books in the MP3 format. Have any
of you begun buying MP3 audio books for your patrons?

We have bought some but so few patrons have the players. We do have a player
that we are planning to loan. I like the idea of them as there is only 1 cd
to keep track of and the price is good.

Kathy,

I've looked at them and yes, it is nice that there are only 1 or 2 discs to
each set. My guess is that the population who would take to them are the
young adults and possibly younger set who probably have a slew of mp3's on
their PCs and are familiar with the format. We have not yet purchased any
for our library but probably will before long.

A lot of the new cars have CD players that also play the MP3 format, and
most DVD players will play MP3s as well.

We have not and have no imediate plans to start purchasing them. Do u
detect a trend that cds are in greater demand than tapes? Also, does your

We have a growing interest in audiobooks on cd, most likely driven by the car
industry more than anything else. This year I will spend about half the
audiobook budget on audiobooks on cd. In the past I have purchased multiple
copies (on cassette) of high demand titles and authors. I plan on purchasing
the high demand titles in both formats and multiple copies in both as needed.
At this time we have no intention of moving to MP3.

We do not duplicate audios and cds. Since many of the new cars are coming
with cds equipment, I think they will stand up to the handling better than
audios. We have more audios than cds but are purchasing some cds as well.

I do duplicate some very popular authors, as my patrons are gradually
moving over to the cd books. The trend has not reached a cd majority
yet, but I am now buying more of the best sellers on cd only.
