It may be YA or JF, but definitely not a picture book. The story was about two young boys, an indian and a farmer. The first half of the book is about the farmer boy, and just when you are getting really into it, the story switches to the indian boy. At the end of the book, there is some kind of a battle, and one of the boys, she wasn't sure which, was killed. She said that the book was very sad.
The boys are not friends, and do not know each other until the end of the story.
The closest match I've been able to find on NoveList is The Meeker Massacre by Wayne Overholser, but I can't find a detailed enough description to be able to tell if it's the one.
Any help would be appreciated!

Basically, the book is about a white boy living on a farm in Utah. He ends
up living with the Indians for a few years. There is an Indian boy who
dies, but the 2 boys knew each other beforehand and it wasn't because of a
battle. It has been a while since I read the book, so I can't remember if
there was a battle where someone dies later... The white boy ends up riding
for the Pony Express. This is also a true story and the town of Wilson,
Wyoming was named after the boy, Nick Wilson.
Well, good luck!

I just had a question from a customer who said her husband read this book
when he was young and loved it, and she wants to buy it for him but can't
identify it.
