The book is about World War III. It starts with a war between India and
Pakistan and also has Russia invading western Europe. The title possibly
has the word "Guardian" in it and it may have been published around
1983. The young man did not have any information on main characters in
the book as he hadn't read that far.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have had no luck on Novelist or
other sources.

Your patron might also like the spin-off series The Marauders by Michael
McGann:
"The Guardians rose up as America's last line of defense. But rebuilding a
shattered nation wasn't enough for these guerrilla Freedom Fighters. Enemy
forces were massing in Europe, plotting the ultimate takeover. World War IV was
inevitable. And so The Guardians created a unique hunter-killer commando unit
to send overseas. An unstoppable force of elite warriors. Their code name..The
Marauders. The Marauders have joined the defiant battle being waged by
underground rebels for a 'Free France.' But before they can meet their contact,
they run headlong into a wall of enemy soldiers. Suddenly the unit is split
apart, and the Marauders are thrust into a bloody war..and a desperate fight to
stay alive in a foreign land where tyrants rule--and chaos reigns!"
There are at least 7 books in the series: The Marauders; Blood Kin - involves
the Irish civil war; Liar's Dice; Convoy Strike; Ghost Warriors; ? ;Fortress of
