Hi folks,

Do any of you use email as a reader's advisory tool? Is anyone sending
solicited (or unsolicited -- spam!) email mailing lists to patrons (New
Adult Fiction, New Movies [removed]@ the Library, etc.)? How well has it been
received? Any other use of email? Long text lists may be too
burdensome . . . maybe a select list? Any ideas?

My library offers a subscription to a monthly newsletter that covers what's
new at the library, reader's advisory, helpful web links, etc. The reader's
advisory portion generally just tackles a section of the RA that's available
on the website with links, so it's not very wordy. Past newsletters are
archived on the site so if you'd like to see the January 2003 newsletter,
it's here - http://www.pbclibrary.org/b&bjan2003.htm. I'm sorry but I don't
have any statistics on the number of subscribers or click-throughs.

I certainly use email all the time with
one-on-one reader's advisory interactions - I
find it really handy to follow up a brief
interaction with a follow-up reading list
customized for that patron. But we haven't done
anything more general than that.

The Great Reads section of our website has a "new and notable" listing
of 3-5 brief reviews of new books in 42 subjects/genres every month.
We offer what we call the "just for you" service where customers can
sign up to have these reviews emailed to them on the first of each month
for any of the subjects or genres they choose. A link to the library
catalog from the email allows them to click any title they want to
reserve and place the reserve online. This service has been extremely
popular.
