He did not give me too much information but I am guessing that either he or a family member has been recently diagnosed and he is looking for a good outcome to read about. He first asked about mental illness in California but later returned to say he wanted stories.
I showed him Fiction Catalog but he did not seem to understand how to use it and I have not had any time to use it tonight.
I thought I would see if the all-knowing FictionL folks would be able to help. Young Adult titles would work also. Thanks for any help I can get!

Help! I had a patron in tonight who is looking for recent fiction - from
the last few years - dealing with mental illness that has a positive
outcome. I went through Fiction Catalog with him but most of those listed
where either too old or did not sound like they had a positive outcome. He
does not want any that have violence.

I'm not sure I would agree with Lisa's suggestion that Laurie Halse
Anderson's _Speak_ concerns mental illness. Trauma, perhaps, and
protracted healing, but not mental illness, at least in my reading ... I
would welcome other opinions.
This book is very much worth discussing for all ages, mental illness or

I thought of the "Mitford Series" books by Jan Karon. Altho'
secondary characters to the story line, Uncle Billy and (is it?)
Rose, eccentric townspeople, offer delightful accents to the books.
I think it is the 1st book in the series where Rose's misguided
tendancy to direct & boss people is solved by making her an
honorary traffic cop/director. (Altho' never named that I remember, I
think her symptoms are of a manic depressive or bipolar disease.)
How good that fiction is being used to help uplift, etc. someone.

America / E.R. Frank
Mixed-race America is abandoned by his drug-addicted
mother. We first meet him in a treatment facility
after a suicide attempt. His psychiatrist works with
him, patient through weeks of America's silence, to
help him heal from a terribly damaging childhood.
Damage / A.M. Jenkins
Austin is a high-school senior whose life appears
perfect. He's a football star and dates the
best-looking girl in school, but he is so depressed
that he is contemplating suicide. The book is written
in 2nd person, a device which effectively pulls the
reader into Austin's internal dialogue. Eventually, he
opens up to a friend about his feelings.
Cut / Patricia McCormick
Callie has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital
because she cuts herself. At first, she refuses to
speak, but gradually she puts together the memories
and emotions that led to this behavior.
Stop Pretending: What Happened When My Big Sister Went
Crazy / Sonia Sones
Auto-biographical, this is an emotionally-charged
collection of poems written from the perspective of a
13-year-old girl whose big sister is
institutionalized. As her sister recovers, she is able
to return to emotional normalcy herself.
A similar story, but one in which the sister must
learn to accept her older sister's
institutionalization:
Memories of Summer / Ruth White
Two teen sisters from rural Virginia move to Flint, MI
with their father. Summer, the older sister, has
always been different, but the community where she
grew up accepted her. Now, the harsh urban setting and
isolation precipitate her slide into schizophrenia and
attempted self-mutilation. Father and daughter must
make the difficult choice to institutionalize Summer.
