We are thinking about subscribing to the chapter-a-day internet service and were wondering what other libraries who subscribe to the service think of it and what their patrons think of it.

Our libraries don't offer Chapter-a-Day, but I subscribe to three of the
book clubs. Sometimes the books don't appeal to me, and I just delete them
all week. But I've found many books that I wanted to finish. You would
want to be sure that if your library offers the service, you own the books
being promoted on Chapter-a-Day, so that the people who want to finish a
book can find it at the library.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We probably only have a baker's dozen people enrolled in the club, but those
who do get the emails are very happy about it. It's fairly low cost, next
to no work for you, and it does make the patrons happy. My director is
pleased with the dozen or so involved and to top it off, the books that I
purchase that are book club selections do indeed circulate, some of them
amazingly well. It's helped me to punch up my teen and christian fiction
sections for example, as I don't have a very good background in those
departments. I also have the bookcovers of the week up on the website
(Chapter a day supplies the code, all you have to do is plug it in and they
generate the info) and I think that also gets people interested in the
books, even if they're not in the book clubs. And the selection of books is
quite good. I belong to two of the clubs myself and though most weeks, I
end up deleting (don't feel guilty!) occassionally one title will catch my
eye and I'll read it. Discovered a few books I wouldn't have read otherwise.
(Did crack me up though the other week, I was planning a trip to Ireland and
the subject headings of the two books were Kelly and Ireland, I kid you
not!)Kelly Benson

We are just now making the service available to the public and haven't
received any input from them. However, the staff here has been subscribed
as a trial for the service. I've found that the e-mails are well done and
it is a manageable amount each day. The only complaint that we have is
that we wish the books would be newer selections. The general public
however would appreciate the selections because they would maybe catch
books that they would otherwise miss. We are also advertising it in
connection with our ILL system.Michele Beyke
