This doesn't help you David, but I've been wondering about that book as well, accept for myself. I read it in grade school (80's) and wrote a play, maybe in 4th grade, based off of this book for my class's weekly library session. If it is the same book that I am thinking of, she has a younger brother that is mentally handicapped and an abusive father. But I don't know the name of the book :(
