Hi, folks.
I'm looking for a book for younger readers,
possibly set in Tennessee in the 1920's, about a
lame mountain girl who marries a schoolteacher.
The protagonist may be named 'Lancey,' although I
have my doubts.
Anyone know this?

This doesn't help you David, but I've been wondering about that book as well, accept for myself. I read it in grade school (80's) and wrote a play, maybe in 4th grade, based off of this book for my class's weekly library session. If it is the same book that I am thinking of, she has a younger brother that is mentally handicapped and an abusive father. But I don't know the name of the book :(

This is maybe a shot in the dark, but I read a novel with exactly the same "flavour". Published in 1980, it's calle "The People Therin", by Mildred Lee, and it made a hge impression on me. I'm not sure if the romantic interest was a teacher or a social worker. Loved it, and even if it isn't -the one - it may be of interest.

Bravo, Helene! This is, indeed, the book, and
the character's name is Lanthy, not Lancey. I
found a library here in Philadelphia that had it,
they checked the info for me, and I emailed my
patron in Seattle with the answer. Another
triumph for transcontinental, international
reader's advisory!
