Patrons generally seem to like the serendipity of finding new titles on
the shelves on occasion. Problems occasionally arise when a patron
searching from home calls in to say "I see that you all have a copy of
Quentins on the shelf, can you hold it for me." If it is a browser copy,
they are told that that copy is nonreservable, but that they are welcome
to com eover and get it if it is still there when they arrive. Most folks
understand the concept, but some are put off when they are told that we
cannot hold that copy for them. Staff does need to be aware not to set
aside browser copies for patrons.
We do not have a separate line for browser copies. We simply take about
1/4 of any book with multiple copies and make those browsers. This seems
to work well for us and for the patrons.

At the Grand Rapids Public Library we have what is called "GRPL Express
Books." "Express" books go out for 3 weeks (regular titles do to). They
cannot have holds placed on them and they cannot be renewed. There is a
special label on the spine of each item signifying it as an "Express"
book.
The money for these items comes out of our New Arrivals budget and how
many New Arrivals ordered determines how many titles will be "Express."
For example, if I order 15 copies of Crichton's Prey, 5 of these will
probably be designated as an Express title.
Express books are fabulous! Our New Arrival section actually has books in
it!! Patrons and staff alike are happy with this arrangement - they have a
chance at getting a new release immediately instead of being #400 in the
queue.
The only problem I have encountered arises when a patron, looking at the
webpac, sees a copy of a hot title on shelf at another branch, and can't
understand why they cannot have it held for them (because it is Express).
I hope this helps.

We have a separate section of our collection designated for what we call
"Red Hot Books." These are all current best-sellers, mostly fiction, for
which we have corresponding titles in the regular collection. We don't take
holds on these, charge 25 cents a day for overdue fine (rather than the
regular 5 cents a day), allow only a one week checkout (rather than the
regular two weeks) and don't allow renewals. Staff don't mind, and patrons
love it. We put them in a high-profile spot near the new fiction, and the
catalog reflects the Red Hot location too, so they're easy to find. The only
problem has been in managing the holds placed on the title. Staff hasto to
ensure that they place the hold on only the regular copy of the book, not
the Red Hot, and the system then doesn't remove the hold of a user who
checks out the Red Hot version. So we're still working out the kinks on
that! We do have a special budget line on our budget for these books
because we lease them from Baker & Taylor. That way we return them when
they're not "hot" anymore and get a new set. It's worked out well for us.

Personally, I have some quibbles with the idea. I know that many customers
are very pleased to see a copy of a best seller on the shelf for immediate
checkout. However, those people who have been waiting patiently on a hold
list for weeks are forced to let people who just happen along cut in line in
front of them. To me that seems unfair.
However the system works fairly well, and as I said the lucky customers who
happen upon Q is for Quarry (or whatever it is this week) are very pleased.
The only customer complaints come up infrequently from customers who know
they have not yet received their holds, but find a copy on the shelf, or
from customers who are frustrated that they cannot renew a best seller.

We had a similar set up when I joined Cumberland County Public Libraries
three years ago. The public already had "the hang of it" so I did not
experience the transition and could not speak to any problems that may have
occurred during the program's early days. It seems to be a very workable
system now. Our nonreservable/nonrenewable books are based on the number of
holds for the title, and mostly fall to the NY Times bestseller list. We
make 25% of new bestsellers with long reserve lists nonreservable.
Personally, I have some quibbles with the idea. I know that many customers

CCPL has a collection of popular fiction called "Sizzlers" that go out for 7
days and carry a $1 per day fine for overdue items. It has been a popular
browsing collection, but some titles like The Bear and the Dragon, and
Shelters of Stone (very long books) gave many patrons pause, since they did
not feel they would be able to read them in a week.
We have not had any problems with providing this service. The selections are
made by our Central Selection department for all branches, though not all
branches receive Sizzler copies of the same books, based on patron
demographics.

The Most Wanted go out for 7 days, are not renewable and can be borrowed only by our Skokie patrons. The overdue fee is also more than the normal overdue charge. The two week copies if on the shelf can be borrowed by anyone. Usually they are not on the shelf because patrons have put reserves on them. The Most Wanted are very popular and offer the browser a chance at getting a copy of the current big best seller without waiting. The only problem I see with our system is that often patrons think that the 7 day collection is the only collection we have of best sellers. We do have a separate budget line for this collection.

The library users have responded to the program very well. Staff reaction
has been good. We have a "no staff checkout policy". That was accepted by
staff; staff understands that the whole point of Readers Express is that
there are bestsellers available on the shelf. If the books are all checked
out by staff, that defeats the purpose.
When demand dies down, the branch staff can add the titles to the catalog
record and keep them as cataloged copies, or they can send withdraw them.
We do have a separate budget for this program that is a subline of the
request and reserve budget.

The one complication we have had was with a complaint of having of a
politically conservative book on the collection and not having
another title of the opposite view. For nonfiction we purchase 2
copies of books on PW's bestseller list unless there is enough demand
to get more copies.
We budget $10,000 a year for the collection. This is a separate line
item.
Here is my report to my supervisor about the collection:
------------------
The Book Express collection was created to speed up circulation of
the new high demand bestsellers and to lower the number of holds on
these titles. The collection was released March 1 1999, starting with
107 books. Now the collection has grown to over 400 books. The
collection has between 350 and 430 books at any given time. Books
purchased for the collection have a high priority for processing and
typically are put on the display 1-2 days after delivery. The books
have a yellow spine label and sticker on the front of the book
describing the checkout period and policies for the collection. The
date due sticker is also yellow and the checkout staff stamp the date
they are due.
The books have a 7-day checkout period with no renewals and no grace
period; fines begin the day after the item is due. There are no holds
permitted on the books and a patron is only allowed 2 titles at one
time. We have discovered that when a patron checks out a book
express title and has that same book on hold the system will
automatically cancel the hold.
Selecting
Most of the books in the collection are on standing order. Before the
start of the collection, the reference librarians met and chose
popular authors. I have updated the list twice since then. For most
authors, we order 3 or 5 copies for each title. The big demand
authors (Grisham, Cornwell, Clancy) we order 10 copies. Apart from
the standing orders, we order titles based on which titles have an
large amount of holds. On average I look for at least 5 or more holds
on a fiction title and over 10 for non-fiction before I will consider
the book. I also look over the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list and
the top sellers list from Amazon to see what books are popular.
Sometimes the "New and Notable" books display will garner enough
interest to add a title.
Weeding
Book Express titles come off the collection after 6 months like the
rest of the new materials. Sometimes it takes me a couple of months
to finally get a hold of the books as they are constantly
circulating. I will also pull books that are not circulating much or
have many of the same title on display frequently (especially true of
the 10 copy titles). How much I pull also depends on how many books
are on the display at the time. I try to leave a good selection of
books up even if they are a little older. We send 1 copy of each
title to a small remote collection at the local senior center and the
rest are sent to our Friends organization to be sold in their book
sale.
Circulation Statistics
Average times a Book Express book has been circulated in 6 months: 20
Average times a regularly circulated book has been circulated in 6
months (we have 14 day circ for new books): 11
Average total circulation in 6 months (both Book Express and
regularly circulated copies)
For a title with 3 copies: 84
For a title with 5 copies: 124
For a title with 10 copies: 327
