Lisa Gardner Readalikes - Specific appeal factors
Return to January 2003 thread menu | Fiction_L Archives Menu |
FROM: "Siewert, Karl" <[removed]@tulsalibrary.org>
REC'D: 1/17/03, 1:02 PM
She asked if I could recommend any similar authors, and I drew a blank, but
I told her that Fiction-L could help us out. These are the things she is
looking for:
1) No or very little profanity
(this is important. she wants to be able to
listen with her kids in the car)
2) Mystery/Suspense
3) Fast-paced
4) Unpredictable
I'll compile a list of your suggestions and post it as well as sending it to
her via e-mail.
Thanks in advance!

-----------
I recommend CARPOOL by Mary Cahill--unabridged from Recorded Books.
It's a mystery about a women constantly driving her three children
to their schools and various activities.
------------
Perhaps Kay Hooper's books? Or Tess Gerrittsen, although I am not sure of
the pronfanity part. [note caution below*]
------------
I'd also suggest Heather Graham, Karen Harper, Tami Hoag, Linda Howard,
Charlotte Hughes, Elizabeth Lowell, Helen R. Myers, Karen Robards, and
Carlene Thompson.
--------------
I'd agree with these authors being good as potential Gardner read-alikes,
but I don't know about listening to them with kids in the car. The only
thing the patron mentioned was profanity - but several of these authors have
sometimes very explicit sex scenes...
---------------
I suggest the first three O'Malley audio books, by Dee Henderson: THE
NEGOTIATOR, THE
GUARDIAN and THE TRUTH SEEKER
---------------
[*]I would not allow kids within earshot of Tess Gerrittsen, especially her
last two books. Forgetting the profanity, the subject matter is nightmare
inspiring and extremely gruesome. Definitely not suitable for children.
-------------
My first suggestion would be Dorothy Gilman, if she's available on tape.
Mrs. Pollifax is certainly unpredictable, as her CIA handlers would testify!
And being a senior, she is disinclined to naughty language.
----------------
I would also recommend the books by Diane Mott Davidson. She has a
good mystery but little profanity and is not too scary.
