I know this was a recent question, but I have not been able to find the list
in the archives. Can someone point me to the list of Diana Gabaldon
read-alikes?

Gabaldon’s talent evidences itself in her
Outlander series’ appeal for readers of several
genres. Her attention to period detail and
historical accuracy mixed with a spell-binding
storytelling ability brings a fresh perspective
to the past, appreciated by lovers of historical
fiction. Her imaginative use of unexpected time
travel and the ability of an individual to make a
mark on history appeal to science fiction and
fantasy fans. And very importantly, her
pain-resistant but sensitive “manly” men, strong
intelligent women and their concomitant
“tempestuous love” cannot fail to appeal to
romance lovers everywhere! With enough action to
rival television along with intricate and
suspenseful plots, Gabaldon has carved a new and
profitable genre niche. Her fans naturally
consume her stories as fast as she writes them
and clamor for more. Here are some suggestions
for additional titles that share some of the same
characteristics with the Outlander books.
For the purpose of this list, I’ve confined the
titles to time travel and/or historical fiction
set in Scotland or occasionally England. A myriad
of time travel science fiction and romance books
with other geographical settings await the
armchair time traveler!

BOOKS SET IN SCOTLAND WITH STRONG HISTORICAL
APPEAL:
BROWN, GEORGE MACKAY BESIDE THE OCEAN OF TIME
(1994)
Shortlisted for the 1994 Booker Prize, this
story takes place on an imaginary island near
Scotland, Thorfinn Ragnarson’s birthplace. His

of the island weave this beautifully evocative
story.
KING, SUSAN THE STONE MAIDEN (2000)
The Scottish Highlands of 1170 come to life with
bitter clan feuds, royal political maneuverings

ROBERSON, JENNIFER LADY OF THE GLEN: A NOVEL OF
17TH CENTURY SCOTLAND AND THE MASSACRE OF GLENCOE
(1996)
The beauty of this book is less in its story of

historical ambience of its setting and Roberson’s
engaging writing style.
STRONG, TONY DEATH PIT (1999)

witches’ coven and a seventeenth century witch

BOOKS WITH STRONG ROMANTIC APPEAL
BRISBIN, TERRI A LOVE THROUGH TIME (1998)

transported to medieval Scotland by a mysterious
stranger. (also try A Matter of Time)

wonderful older time travel romance a cut above
others. After marrying Richard Marsdon and moving

relive events from a past life before she can be
happy in the present. Her “vision” takes her to
the sixteenth century where, as Celia Bohen, she
meets people who mirror those of her twentieth
century life.
BOOKS WITH STRONG SCIENCE FICTION/FANTASY APPEAL
BAKER, KAGE IN THE GARDEN OF IDEN (1998)

the garden of Sir Walter Iden of England, 1553.
Compares to Connie Willis’ books – funny and

Traveler is thrown into the position of helping
the decadent class of Eloi in their battle

WILLIS, CONNIE TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG
In a wonderfully descriptive Victorian style,
Willis presents a time-traveling romp so
outrageous I couldn’t leave it off this list! Ned
travels back to Coventry Cathedral in 1940 to
retrieve the “bishop’s stump,” return it to
someone in 1888 and then return to his own time
