I know in the past I have seen several posts about those who have a
database through Excel in which to keep track of books owned/TBR, etc.
Mine are beginning to overtake me and I can no longer keep track...

Anyone willing to share? Please respond off-list.

I found and bought a program called BookBag Plus from a company called
Windsoft I believe. I needed one for my PDA since I have a hard time
remember which craft books I have bought (I have over a thousand books
and leaflets!!!). It loads on your PC also, and it's very easy to enter
data into your computer and then Hotsync with your PDA. The fields
available are title, description, 3 author fields, category, date due,
date read, rating, status, format, location, price, value, to/from,
date, publisher, pub. location, pub date, copyright, volume, edition,
series, language, pages, condition, ISBN, cat#, and website. Only the
Plus version loads on the PC also, and I paid only $25.00 I believe, and
have already gotten an upgrade. I found it through a Google search
while looking for PDA databases. This same company also makes programs
for inventory of music, videos, and other stuff. I highly recommend
this program (and no, I'm not getting a commission here!). You can sort
on any of the fields, so it would be easy to pull out just the mysteries
you've read in 2003 for example. I've started keeping my reading list
on this for this year so I, too, can send in a best books list next year
when the time rolls around again.

Well, I'm one person who has mentioned using Excel to
this purpose. My Excel files cover a year each, to
keep them manageable in size. Fields included are Date
read, Author, Title, Genre, Review, and Description. I
cut and paste the review from Amazon or B&N, as well
as the description (i.e. pub. date, # of pages, ISBN).
You could tailor the fields to include anything you'd
like to track. These are just the categories that I
find useful.

I format the review field not to wrap - this keeps the
cells from expanding to accomodate all that text. I
also add a note in this field about who the reader is
if I've listened to an audio book.

These lists have been very useful to me. I love being
able to sort by the various fields, depending on what
I'm looking for at the time. And I have not found it
to be too labor-intensive to maintain, though I do
tend to fall behind on addind reviews and
descriptions.

I use Microsoft Access--you can choose what fields you want in your table, so I usually have Title, Author, # pages, Date REad, year published and a spot for ratings and comments. Makes a nice record.
