I'm working on a project related to our bestsellers and I'm
wondering if anyone knows if someone has come up with the average
number of times a book can circulate before it falls apart. I'm
particularly interested in an average for hardcover books, but if
anyone knows a number for trade paperbacks or mass market
paperbacks I'll take that too.

Lately it seems many fall apart after they circulate only two or three
times. A few we have bought recently fell apart after going out once. This
is a very bad situation. Cindy

We are experiencing the same. The average circulation we get from
paperbacks and hardbacks varies considerably, depending on the
publisher--and they all seem to be getting worse. A factor that also has a
huge impact on survival-time in the public library is whether or not you use
a book drop. If they fall a long way, or happen to fall open and heavy
items fall on top, book bindings may fail after only 1-2 circulations.

We've had books circulate a hundred times and be in perfect condition
and some - especially lately - barely make it out of processing before
they start falling apart. I put it down to the general decline of
quality and service. In order to save money, publishers are turning to
ever cheaper and cheaper places to print, bind, etc. their books, and it
shows. Spines break, pages fall out, and it hasn't even circulated
once. Disgusting.
