I would highly recommend The Catholic Encyclopedia and The Encyclopedia of
Judaism, both of which have new editions this year. I find Gale's
Encyclopedia of Religion to be very useful. The New Interpreters' Bible is
essential and Jerome's Commentary on the Bible is also good. We try to have
the holy books of each world religion: the Quran in different translations;
the Bhagavad Gita; Talmud explications, etc. We also have many different
mythology source books, including Bulfinch's. Both Booklist and Library
Journal have excellent reference reviews for religion.

A good bible concordance is a must -- try Strong's Exhaustive Concordance.
I would also recommend purchasing a bible dictionary; there are several
available. The Anchor Bible Dictionary is one; you could also check
HarperCollins Bible Dictionary (revised ed.).
Another requisite reference source would be a bible pronunciation guide. We
get reference questions all the time on how to pronounce names from the
Bible.
Another important source would be a dictionary or encyclopedia of world
religions. We use a dictionary published by Oxford, as well as a one volume
encyclopedia by MacMillan. Of course, if you have money in your budget to
spend, you may want to try purchasing the comprehensive Encyclopedia of
Religion, which is also published by MacMillan.
There are many other sources you may want to include, but these are some of
the ones we use the most in our reference department.

I have a couple of suggestions:

The site listed below is on the Notre Dame web site and of course it
deals with primarily Catholic materials (and mostly American Catholic).
I have used the section "Bibliographies and Scholarly Papers" to work on

our collection. http://www.nd.edu/~colldev/subjects/catholic/cath.htm

A recent find that I think is exceptional (as do some our faculty) is _
Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of World Religions_. This book is
exhaustive (1181 pages), dense, wonderfully illustrated and terrific
bibliography. It is a steal for only $49.95!

Also I recently examined an edition of _Survey of Sects, Cults and
Alternative Religions_ by David Barrett. I thought this was a good
source for religions "off the beaten path" so to speak. Pretty cheap
too at $29.95.

If you are not already, you might want ot get on Baker &Taylor's mailing

list for "Spirit: A quarterly preview of religious and inspirational
titles." I have a small budget (can you tell :), but I still find
things that I could/should buy every time it comes out.

I think that the Catholic Encyclopedia is a wonderful reference tool, good
bios, articles on topics such as church architecture that can be useful
for travellers, as well as information on Catholicism. I still like Mircea
Eliade's Encyclopedia of Religion for the depth and breadth of its
coverage. It is pricey but very useful. I agree that a good concordance is
essential, and probably a couple of different editions of the Bible. I
have also found that some of the standard Bible dictionaries or companions
(Harpers, Oxford, etc.) serve very well for quick information. You may
also wish to have a couple of collections of lives of the saints.

In case these haven't been mentioned yet, I would recommend the
following for a Reference collection on religion:

1. Standard collections of Jewish & Christian "non-canonical" texts,
including:

Though I have them in the circulating collection of my
(public) library, the 2 volumes of HOW TO BE A PERFECT
STRANGER: A Guide to Etiquette in Other People's
Religious Ceremonies, published by Skylight Paths, are
invaluable, practical capsule descriptions of worship,
traditions, and customs, and I would recommend them
highly.

In addition to the sources mentioned by others, I'd suggest getting the
most recent edition of "The Handbook of Denominations" by Frank Spencer
Mead et al. It provides historical and doctrinal sketches of most
Christian denominations, even fairly small ones.

I'd also highly recommend looking at the religion section of Ron Blazek's
and Elizabeth Aversa's "The Humanities : a Selective Guide to Information
Sources.", published by Libraries Unlimited. The current (5th) edition
was published in 2000. I don't have a copy of the current edition to
look at, but I recall that a previous edition was helpful to me in
library school. It covers non-Christian scriptures and religious
traditions as well as Christian, and offers non-sectarian descriptions of
the various translations, concordances, commentaries, etc., that are
available. If $75 clothbound or $60 paperback is too pricy and if you
can't justify getting it with departmental funds, try ILL'ing it.
