Can someone give me an English title for this? I got this request
second hand and here's the info as it was related to me: The patron
says she read a story by I.L. Peretz in Yiddish, and she'd like to read
it in English. She doesn't know the English title. The story is about
two Jewish families in the Old Country who are having weddings on the
same day. It was the tradition to have the poor lunch in your yard. So
the two families are competing to have the poor eat in their yard. I
know someone will know this, so thanks in advance.

Hi Linda
I'm not sure of the story but it is probably in the book The I. L. Peretz
Reader, Schocken Books 1990 which has many of his stories that have been
translated into English. There is also the book A Treasury of Yiddish
Stories 2nd ed, Vicking 1990 by How and Greenberg that has collected many
Yiddish stories and a number of Peretz's are in that book. The book I'm
using The Schocken Guide to Jewish Books mentions the names of several
stories by it doesn't describe the stories. Hope this gives you a lead.
