I have had a staff member ask the following question and thought I'd check
with the 'font of all book/reading knowledge', as I have come to think of
Fiction_L...
Do you have any idea how to search for more Serial Novels like
"Naked Came the Phoenix" and "Naked Came the Manatee".
This patron wants books like this. Any suggestions?? We tried
Novelist and What do I read Next?
'Naked Come the Phoenix: a Serial Novel' (St. Martin's Minotaur, 2001) is
by J.D. Robb, et al and 'Naked Came the Manatee: a Serial Novel' (G. P.
Putnam, 1996) is by Carl Hiaasen, et al. So far the only other title I
have found that is listed, in the title field, as a serial novel is 'The
Green Mile: the Complete Serial Novel' by Stephen King. This could be due
our catalog (incorrect cataloging) or perhaps my district has not bought
any other serial novels. Also, John Grisham's "A Painted House" which was
originally published in serialized format in six consecutive issues of "The
Oxford American Magazine" is NOT what the patron is looking for.
Any suggestions like the two 'Naked Came the...' titles would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Whole Family, with chapters by Henry James (duh) and William Dean Howells, among others.
And I can't discover any way to search for these. Serial novels seems to mean originally published serially, ala The Green Mile. It would be a fun list, so I hope there are some more titles out there.

Natural Suspect, Ballantine, 2001, is a serial thriller organized by William Bernhardt. Eleven authors each wrote a chapter.
The Devil's Rood: A Group Novel about American's First Serial Killer, Creative Arts Books Co., 2000.
Finbar's Hotel, Harvest Books, 1999, and Ladies' Night at Finbar's Hotel, Harvest Books, 2000, are collaborations of a group of Irish writers; the plots center around the guests and staff at Finbar's Hotel.
Yeats Is Dead, Vintage, 2002, another Irish collaboration. This time a crime novel done as a benefit for Amnesty International. Already published in the U.K., the Vintage edition is due out here in June.
Then there are the novels written by "The Detection Club" which included a varying number of British mystery writers. There were several titles published under this rubric, all have been reprinted more than once. Some of the books seem to be more collections of inter-related short stories than actual collaborative novels. For a list of titles and the authors involved with each book, see http://www.cs.appstate.edu/~sjg/detectionclub.html.

(2) No one has yet mentioned in this context NAKED CAME THE STRANGER
(whose existence is why the two later "NAKED" novels get those titles),
a mildly erotic serial novel published under the joint pseudonym of
"Pauline Ashe" back in 1969.
(3) As noted, "serial novel" would mean something totally different.
I'd suggest "round robin novel" or "round robin story."
(4) There were several round robin detective stories published in
England in the 1930s and 1940s, many under the auspices of The
Detection Club; these have had modern US pb reprints because such
authors as Christie and Carr contributed chapters, which meant
that Christie etc. completists had to have them--bad as most were
as detective stories. For list of some of these, see
http://www.cs.appstate.edu/~sjg/detectionclub.html
(5) In the sf/f world, I can't think of offhand of any full-length
round robin novels, though there are a few short stories, most
famously "The Challenge From Beyond" (which are actually two
round robin stories, one sf and one fantasy) from 1935:

Here's some folks doing a new "Challenge from Beyond" roundrobin,
though none of theirames mean anything to me:

97 [Sep 97], $8.95, 176pp, tp, cover
by Robert H. Knox); Anthology/novel based on an unfinished story by Robert
E. Howard, with a different author writing each
of the 17 chapters. The first 12 chapters were published in the magazine
Fantasy Crossroads; the remainder appear here for
the first time. Authors include Karl Edward Wagner, Michael Moorcock, and
Marion Zimmer Bradley. Available from

(I've read it and it's terrible, by the way.)
I suppose some of the WILD CARDS series books ed. George R.R. Martin
might qualify, though they are mostly anthologies of stories against
a shared background, with some overlap of plots, rather than real
novels. But one or two at least are described as "braided novels"
(another possible search term).
Braided novels overlap in sf/f with "shared universe" anthologies
or series books; again, single volumes in such are usually
anthologies of stories by multiple authors against a common
background, rather than unified *novels* by multiple authors,
but it might be close enough to be of interest to your client
anyway (assuming s/he reads sf/f): WILD CARDS, THIEVES WORLD,
HEROES IN HELL, LIAVEK, etc.
(6) Searches on google.com or other search engines on such
terms as round robins round robin fiction round robin novels
braided novel shared universe stories etc. should
keep you busy for a bit.

I should have said "could mean something totally different," rather
than "would" (that is, some people do refer to NAKED CAME THE
STRANGER and such as serial novels, but to me a "serial novel"
would first bring up the impression of simply a novel that has
been serialized in a magazine--something that used to be routine
but these days is scarce (for that matter, magazines that still
print fiction these days are themselves scarce...).

There's also Naked Came the Farmer, written by Illinois authors
http://bradley.bradley.edu/~dlb/farmer.html
A serialized round robin murder mystery written in the tradition of
Naked Came The Stranger, and the more recent, Naked Came The
Manatee. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Peoria Public Library.
Also, Naked Came the Plowman
http://members.tripod.com/theurbanite/plowman.html
written by 25 mid-western authors
This rollicking adventure tells an exciting tale of time travel, a
naked guy wandering around, evil catfish men (who are also naked),
and life on the Mississippi. Money raised by the book will go
toward a Midwest Writing Center.

Oxford American Magazine" is NOT what the patron is looking for.
If memory serves, the "Naked came the...." titles above owe their birthright
to NAKED CAME THE STRANGER, by "Penelope Ashe" in which a group of
journalists got together to see if they could pen a risque (for want of a
better word) book. From what I remember when the hoopla came out, anything
remotely literary or journalistic was blue-pencilled. The whole thing was
done for fun, and became quite a success.
I think Julie Garwood also wrote a trilogy with "Rose" in the title.
And Iris Johansen, Kay Hooper and Fayrene Preston each wrote volumes in the
Bantam-published series, THE DELANEYS OF KILLAROO. You can find out ind.
titles in the series by inputting the series name as a search time on Amazon.
Speaking of serials - one should recall Dickens, many of whose novels were
published serially.

EVERY search you do using NoveList gives you 250 hits. That doesn't mean you have 250 matches - you have to look at the number of words matching in your hits. If you had 10 words the first one or two hits will have all of those words and it will drop from there; by the time you get to #250 you may only have one or two words matching.
I'm a big fan of NoveList, but stating that you have 250 matches is an exageration of its ability.
