Our group just finished Motherland: A Mother-Daughter Journey to Reclaim the
Past, by Fern Schumer Chapman. It was a wonderful discussion, then the
author came last night to talk about her writing of it and what's happened
since she finished writing it(a true story). Another fantastic program and
discussion.

The author is the daughter of a woman who was sent to America at the age of
12 from Germany at the beginning of WWII, to keep her safe. The woman had
never opened up to anyone since that time about her feelings at losing her
entire family, or what she lost from her heritage by losing her parents and
homeland. So her American daughter was without that history and identity
too. Finally, in 1990, they returned to Germany together and began to
remember and learn and "reclaim their past". It's touching,
thought-provoking, sometimes funny and shocking, but not grim or violent as
many holocaust books can be. Many of my group said that they saw
connections with their own relationships with mothers/daughters, even when
they were not Jewish. I recommend this book highly!

Eddie's Bastard by William Kowlaski. I've been recommending this one to
everyone who says they need something a little different from what they
usually read. Everyone has raved about it. And yes, it is uplifting,
without much angst, and has some substance to it. A really great read. And
it takes place in western NY state, which should please your patrons, too.

I wouldn't call this book uplifting but our group thoroughly enjoyed "Time and
Again" by Jack Finney. Taking place in the late 18th century, it presents a
sense of place so vivid you feel like you are walking the streets of NY,
touching the goods on Merchant's Row, whizzing on a sleigh ride while trying
to stay warm, delighting in the "new" of the past.Blending, romance, science
fiction, and time travel, this book caused a lively discussion amongst our
male and female participants. We were all delighted by this oldie but goody!

Jane Roberts Wood wrote a trilogy of short novels centered around a teacher
and her family in Texas and Arkansas in the first third of the 20th century.
They are somewhat a social history of west Texas and the Arkansas Delta in
that they provide a background for issues such as race relations, women's
suffrage while doing a wonderful job of telling of life in those days. The
books are The Train to Estelline, A Place Called Sweet Shrub and Dance a
Little Longer. They are good reads, fun and thought provoking.

What about Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts...sure, there are some sad parts, but overall, a pretty uplifting book.

Fun and uplifting mean different things to different people, but I think
The Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver could be considered uplifting,
fun, substantial and discussion-worthy.

Ellen-I recommend Joan Medlicott's THE LADIES OF
COVINGTON SEND THEIR LOVE. There's a sequel: THE
GARDENS OF COVINGTON, and I think a third one in the
series coming out soon. They are lovely books about
three 'elderly' women who move into a house in North
or South Carolina which one of the women inherits.
