I found the same situation with the author of the Provincial Lady books,
E. M. Delafield. Even Miss Read doesn't have a big presence online.
Thanks so much for any information.

My suggestion would be that you forget the online part and check out
reference books like "American Authors" and "Who Was Who" under the names
you find listed on those "Gentle Reads" pages.

I have just discovered Elizabeth Cadell, and am trying to learn more
about her. Where does a non-librarian go on the internet to get
information on older writers. I searched Google, and Sherlock, but have
mostly come up with "gentle reads" lists from libraries. I did find her
dates; 1903-1989.
I found the same situation with the author of the Provincial Lady books,
E. M. Delafield. Even Miss Read doesn't have a big presence online.
Thanks so much for any information.

The "New General Catalog of Old Books and Authors" is sometimes
useful, at least for dates, pseudonyms, and lists of books, but
not much so in this case:
http://www.kingkong.demon.co.uk/ngcoba/ngcoba.htm
(Violet) Elizabeth CADELL, nee VANDYKE (F: 1903 Nov 10 - 1989 Oct 9)
(&ps: Harriet AINSWORTH)
Miss, READ (see: Dora SAINT)
Dora SAINT (F: 1913 Apr 17 - living 2000)
(ps: Miss READ)
The World Biographical Index is often useful for older authors, but
again these did not make the cut:
http://www.biblio.tu-bs.de/acwww25u/wbi_en/
As someone else (or several someones) have already pointed here, not
everything is on the 'net--and often (usually, I'd say...) the best
things are not, at least not freely available. All three of these
authors have entries in the CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS series, which is
both a large (200-or-so-volume) set of printed books and an
available-by-institutional-subscription-only database, for instance,
and perhaps a library near you has access to this--or at worst could
get copies of the entries from the print version for you via
Interlibrary Loan. Again, Cadell at least is in TWENTIETH CENTURY
ROMANCE AND HISTORICAL WRITERS (a 1990 reference book from St. James
Press), and almost certainly entries and articles on all three could
be found in such sources as BIOGRAPHY AND GENEALOGY MASTER INDEX
(again, available both as a series of books or as a subscription
database) and various general periodical and newspaper indexes.
