I would suggest "Crazy Love" by David Lozell Martin.

A little girl and her mother plant a garden one spring. The little girl
notices that they do things a little differently than their neighbors, who
are also tilling the soil. “That’s because they are growing flowers,” says
Mom. “These are better than flowers.”
It turns out that they are growing vegetables. And not just any vegetables,
these are Chinese vegetables. The little girl considers them ugly
vegetables, full of lumps and bumps and not at all appetizing. As a result,
the little girl envies her neighbors petunias, peonies and poppies.
But then one day she and her mother harvest the ugly vegetables. As her
mother prepares them, a wonderful odor fills the air, carrying a smell good
enough to eat up and down the neighborhood.
Soon the neighbors arrive, bearing armloads of flowers, managing to trade
them for a bowl full of the delicious Ugly Vegetable Soup.
There are lots of little lessons here, patience, compromise, sharing and
prejudice (judging a veggie by its cover, as it were.)
The colorful, flat illustrations are done in gouache on watercolor paper.
Included in the back is a recipe for Ugly Vegetable Soup and a list of the
Chinese vegetables and how to recognize and pronounce them. A tasty
combination.

Hey all-
I've got a request to put together a list of books similiar to Paul
Fleischman's Seedfolks. The book is about a neighborhood creating community
through creating a community garden. What I'm looking for are titles that
have the similiar theme of working together and community building from
people of different backgrounds.
Although Seedfolks is a childrens book, the list is not limited to children'
s book. All audiences appreciated.

My collection development class (thank you, David Carr!) got to read Tracy
Kidder's _Hometown_, a nonfiction look at the town of Northampton, MA.
Elegantly written, insightful, treats people from all races, classes,
genders and abilities with dignity - a lovely read, and a wonderful look
at the different potentials people bring to the notion of community.

From Action Alliance for Children, these are books about the
"support children get — and give — in their neighborhoods and
circles of friends."
