I am doing a book discussion in July and want to do a mystery. My group is mostly older women who read whatever I choose but they don't like a lot of gore and "sick" sex.I like some laughs too. I would like your opinions on the three I have narrowed it down to and which one you would choose if you were doing it. I have not read any of these so please be candid. Thanks. "Comedy of Heirs" by MacPherson; "Long After Midnight" by Johansen and "Prayers for Rain" by Lehane.

In good conscience, I would not recommend Dennis Lehane. He is an excellent
writer and has won several awards, but his work is just this side of "gory
and sick." The language is fairly raw, too. Iris Johansen used to write
fairly steamy romances but I haven't read any of her thrillers yet. By
default, I guess that leaves "Comedy of Heirs" which sounds like it might be
funny (I just checked it in our catalog, too, I may have to read it myself).

Dennis Lehane is fabulous but tends to be dark and
intense; Iris Johansen has written many romances, and
is currently aimed at the Nora Roberts/Sandra Brown
demographic; but Rett McPherson sounds like it might
be just what you're looking for, a cozyish series with
a genealogical bent. Good luck!

Iris Johansen's "Long After Midnight" has some pretty graphic sex scenes. I
have not read the other two books, so I cannot comment on them.

Rett MacPherson's books are great. They are not gory and are a fun, light
read.

The Big Nap and Nursery Crimes by Ayelet Waldman are also great fun reads.
