Barsetshire. Angela Thirkell took up where Anthony Trollope left off, and
wrote about 20 volumes continuing the series.
Assorted authors have done continuations of Jane Austen, Daphne DuMaurier,
and Dumas. And, of course, there's "Scarlett," the sequel to "GWTW."
The DragonLance Chronicles (sf) and its imitators (Forbidden Worlds, etc.)
are by diverse hands.
Both Anne McCaffrey and Andre Norton are using co-authors frequently now in
various of their series; I suppose this would count.

...Yes, including "Classic," New Gen, DS9, and Voyager. Also Star Wars and
Quantum Leap. Also the new Farscape novels.
Chris Stasheff (a former neighbor of mine and a very nice gentleman)
continued Sprague DeCamp's Harold Shea fantasies.
Then, of course, there are the "shared worlds"--Thieves' World, Liavek,
Merovingian Nights, etc.

Harlequin's series, Welcome to TYLER, fits your description.
The first in this series about a fictional small town in Wisconsin
is entitled _Whirlwind_ by Nancy Martin. There are at least
10 separate titles, as my LATE ON A HOLIDAY SUNDY
memory goes.
Harlequin and Silhouette both have many "continuity" series where different
authors write the books within the series. One is called "36 hours."
Another is: "The Year of Loving Dangerously."
Also, I think you'll findin the mystery genre, The Nero Wolfe series that was
begun so splendidly by Rex Stout now has other books added to the canon
(after Stout's death). Ditto books by "Ellery Queen." And of course there
are the post-Fleming "James Bond" books.
Dennis Lien and other experienced mavens will surely have more examples to
share.
Happy hunting!

There's also the controversial (law suit last year, I think), "The Wind Done
Gone," a sequel to GWTW, but from the African-American POV.

and the blurb from the 'top page'
"A select list of recent fiction that includes sequels to both old and modern classics. These titles also represent recent fiction that derives plot and/or character details from previously published works. To locate a classic author and their recent sequels and related titles click on the first letter of the author's surname."
Whilst these are mostly single titles, there may be some sequels and series entries that are useful.

The _X-Wing_ series (also Star Wars) is another that would be applicable. This series has been penned by 2 authors: Aaron Allston and Brian Stackpole.

Again Michael Stackpole.
Actually all of the Star Wars novels could be considered a series written by
different authors including Timothy Zahn, Michael Stackpole, Kevin J.
Anderson, Barbara Hambley, Alan Dean Foster, Terry Brooks, Michael Reaves,
Steve Perry, Greg Bear, K.W. Jeter, A.C. Crispin, Michael Kube-McDowell,
Roger MacBride Allen, Dave Wolverton, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, and Vonda
McIntrye among others. Many of these authors wrote trilogy series, although
there are several stand alones. Kevin J. Anderson and Michael Stackpole
probably hold the record for the most books written in the series, although
Timothy Zahn has five as well.

Yes, there are indeed a number of authors (I count 28 not including authors in the short story collections) who have contributed to Star Wars fiction. During May CCPL has had our collection on display. If anyone would be interested, I could forward you a full list of all published Star
Wars fiction. According to my records, we own all but 3 titles that are currently published.
The Star Wars display has gone over quite well this month, in case anyone wonders.
