We give a little alphabetical test of putting 10 authors & their books in
order (in the past some have had them put actual books in order) and 8 groups
of 5 dewey decimal numbers in order ( last 3-4 or more difficult). We have
set questions that have been approved by the city's human resource dept.
Last year I hired a grade 10 (a step above our pages). I didn't think we
needed the pre-test for this position (mostly assists at the circ desk with
some back ground duties, but may need to sort books for pages or even shelve
if we have a vacancy). The person I hired worked at the community college
lib., had been responsible for assiting with computer use and
closing/security procedures. Thought this was a great hire. Turned out she
had reading and math dylexia and couldn't count change. It took several
months to do enough documentation to dismiss her even during the probation
period. Now I give the test...NO assumptions!
Our official job description speaks to the physical demands of the job, but I
emphasis them strongly without getting into ADA issues. Bring up the type
of clothes that are acceptable and not acceptable. I even tell them that
some thing the job is very boring, BUT at the branches they do have some
oportunity for interacting with the public, answering the hones when the circ
desk is busy and learning towork the circ desk. At our main library a page
strictly shelves with out any variation in duties. My personal opinion is
that some variation is duties helps our cause. THey also are totally
responsible for different parts of the collection, after 3-4 months the
assignments are rotated so they get to know the whole collection and aren't
pernanently "stuck" with doing JE picture books for the lenght of their
tenure :)!!
They must be 16 or older.
