Our region is reading Pete Hamill's "Snow in August" as a One Book, One
Region book discussion. We'd like to post a list of recommendations for
books that are have similar themes - Jewish mysticism, baseball as a link
to a friendship, baseball in the 40's &50's, etc.
I've used What Do I Read Next, but really didn't find anything. I thought
Wait Till Next Year (non-fiction) and The Painted House would fit the bill
for baseball/friendship theme.
I'd appreciate any other suggestions.

"The Chosen" by Chaim Potok springs immediately to mind.

Try The Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger. A novel written in epistolary
style that features a young Jewish boy who makes friends with a profesional
baseball player in the early 1940's. Funny and touching and very
enjoyable...

For the Jewish mysticism theme, Bee Season by Myla Goldberg might do. I
haven't read either book, but from reviews and other information I think
there are some other themes in common, such as coming-of-age.
