Science Fiction question - Civil War sailors
|
FROM: Becky nolastname <sinann@yahoo.com>

My patron saw a book that was part of a series, but
didn't pick it up & now can't find it.
The premise is that a bunch of Civil War-era sailors
gets transported by large, warlike aliens to a planet
where they are enslaved. They see people from other
eras of Earth, like a Roman gladiator. They start an
uprising.
I read a lot of science fiction, but I can't figure
out what this might be -- it sounds like a cross
between Harry Turtledove & Battlefield Earth. I
appreciate your help!

The closest I can come up with to this is David Weber's "The Excalibur
Alternative" But in this story, it is 14th century British longbowman and
sailors that are kidnapped, not Civil War-era people.
This book was an expansion on a short story "Sir George and the Dragon"
that Weber wrote for an anthology "Foreign Legions". That anthology did have
stories of kidnapped Roman soldiers as well.
You will refer to me as "Librarian," Sir-I am not a "Bookie"!

Female authors with male protagonists:
Andre Norton's Witch World series starts of with Simon Tregarth as the main
character, and several subsequent entries feature male characters in the
lead role, such as The Jargoon Pard.
Mercedes Lackey's Brightly Burning, Owlflight/Owlsight/Owlknight, It Takes
a Thief, Magic's Pawn/Magic's Promise/Magic's Price all feature male leads.
The Serpent's Shadow divides the lead between a man and a woman.
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.
Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series; and if he's at all
interested in SF these are tops.
Madeleine L'Engle, A Swiftly Tilting Planet
Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
