take over the care of her younger brothers & sisters on the trail to
find their father in California. I believe the series is set in the 1

"Women's Diaries of the
Westward Journey" by

Mary Dodge Woodward.
"One Thousand White Women," by Jim Fergus.
You might try to find Letters from Honey Hill , nonfiction from
turn-of-the-century Wyoming. Sorry, I can't remember the author &
library
here doesn't own it. I think it came out in late 70s or early 80s.
"Pioneer Women: Voices from the Kansas Frontier," ed. Joanna Stratton.
"Nothing to do but stay: my pioneer mother" By Carrie Young
about Norwegian settlers in North Dakota. It is non fiction, she also
wrote a collection of short stories called "The wedding dress". Both
are
very good.
Also "Heart of the West" by Penelope Williamson, or "True Women" by
Janice Woods Windle.
Mary
Opal: The Journal of an Understanding Heart" by Opal Whiteley. This
is a diary, believed to be written by a six-year-old girl in a
turn-of-the-century Oregon logging camp. This edition is actually a
poetic
adaptation (by Jane Boulton) of the original which was written in prose
form. The prose version (which I have not yet read) is entitled "The
Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow: The Mystical Nature Diary of Opal
Whiteley." Edited by Benjamin Hoff, it includes biographical and other
information about Opal Whiteley and the controversy surrounding the
authenticity of her diary. I would love to see Opal's beautiful work
receive greater exposure, and I hope you can include one or both of
these
titles. Also - there is a beautiful children's picture book version
called
"Only Opal: the Diary of a Young Girl" by Jane Boulton and illustrated
by
Barbara Cooney.
