I love deadlines. I specially love the swooshing sounds they make as they
fly by.

THE APE WHO GUARDS THE BALANCE by Elizabeth Peters (haven't read it so
don't know if apes actually appear in leading roles)
GUMSHOE GORILLA by Keith Hartman (great gorilla cover, but the title
gorilla refers to a former TV character in this alternate
world and does not "really" exist)
MONKEY SHINES by Michael Stewart (suspense/biological horror thriller
rather than mystery as such)
A-100 by "Bruce Harrison" (really Edgar Pangborn)--obscure 1930 mystery
told in part from point of view of a pet monkey, of interest only
because author later became well-known sf writer; book scheduled
to be reprinted in next year or so, but currently out of print)
THE CASE OF THE GRINNING GORILLA by Erle Stanley Gardner (a Perry Mason)
THE MONKEY AND THE TIGER by Robert Van Gulick (two Judge Dee novelettes
in one volume, said monkey appearing in the first one)
THE POISON ORACLE by Peter Dickinson (signing chimp is only witness to
a murder)
THE WHISPERING GORILLA by Don Wilcox (old pulpish sf novel about human
mind transplanted into gorilla body; ape foils crime syndicate)
Some of Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" fantasies are crime novels
(whodunnits or police procedurals, sort of) in form, and virtually
all of them feature The Librarian (an oran-u-tan) as at least a
minor character, but I don't recall any in which The Librarian is
particuarly involved in a mystery plot)

There've also been at least two other detective apes in comics:
LANCELOT LINK, SECRET CHIMP (which started as a TV show) had an
eight-issue comic book run in the early 1970s, and THE ANGEL
AND THE APE (female human and intelligent male ape open a
detective agency together) several issues in the late sixties,
with a later revival. (I realize detective apes in comics are
beyond the intended scope, but as long as I was mentioning
Sherlocko I couldn't resist.) Also, Congorilla (ape with the
mind of Congo Bill) probably did something vaguely detectiveishly
in some strips in between chasing down poachers, putting down
uprisings, saving safiris, or whatever.
Just thought of another comic book example: Detective Chimp. See
http://www.comicboards.com/dcguide/Who/DetectiveChimp_Bio.htm
One more borderline case: Vercors' novel YOU SHALL KNOW THEM
had a fifties paperback reprint retitled THE MURDER OF THE
MISSING LINK. (This is *really* a borderline case, since
the novel has also been published under the title BORDERLINE.)
