asked this a.m. for a movie listserv and I had tons of response. Thank

Hi Everyone,
Some of you were kind enough to invite me to pose my doozy movie
question to the group so here goes:

The patron is looking for a movie which has in it the following scene:
it is winter time and a German platoon is hiding and it is watching a
column of Russian tanks go by. The tanks stop. The turret of one tank
starts to swivel toward the hidden soldiers. The battle then starts. One
of the soldiers has the lower half of his body blown away by a direct
hit from a shell. His top half falls to the ground, still erect. Patron
originally saw the film on TV on a PBS type of channel about 4 years
ago.

This sounds like a documentary to me. Do any of you have some ideas?
Apparently, the film is not "Cross of Iron" nor is it "Breakthrough"
a.k.a. "Sergant Steiner."

I thought there was a scene kind of like you described in Kurt Vonnegut's
Slaughterhouse Five.

German platoon but an American one.

This could be the movie Staligrad that came out in 1993. It's a German film
I believe and extremely stark and realistic. I can't say I recall the scene
directly, but I do know there is a part where the Germans are crouched in
their trenches as Soviet tanks approach; very tense until naturally all
"heck" breaks loose. :) Hope this helps.

Patricia,
I believe what your patron is looking for is the German movie Stalingrad
(German title: Bis zum letzten Mann) directed by Joseph Vilsmaier and
released in 1992. I posted your plot incident on a discussion group
frequented by military film buffs, and there was universal agreement that
the incident your patron remembers does appear in Stalingrad. According to
Amazon, it is available on video in either a subtitled German version or
dubbed into English. It is also available on DVD.

Thanks to all of you who helped me find the title to the WWII movie
scene I described involving German soldiers and Russian tanks. The movie
title was indeed "Stalingrad." Our manager of library services was most
impressed (I didn't get a raise however).
