A long, recent, and pretty good example of such that I suggested too
late to make the earlier list is FREEDOM & NECESSITY by Stephen
Brust and Emma Bull (Tor, 1997). Both are best known as sf/f
authors, but this one is 98% mainstream fiction -- maybe 100%
so, depending on how seriously one does or does not take the
beliefs of the villains as to why they're doing what they do.
It does have the usual drawbacks re belief suspension of most
epistolary fiction, though; as I read it I kept mentally hearing
such subtext as "well, now that we have hiked twenty miles today
and fought off more threats to our lifes, I'm going to take just
a brief while to write you a nineteen-page letter before heading
for bed..."
