Disappearance in Africa

I have a patron who would like to track down the best book she ever read.
It's about two college friends who have since grown up. The one character
is searching for his friend who has disappeared in Africa. The character
who disappeared is the main character - the son of a powerful & rich father
figure. The son chooses a path in life quite different from his
father. He goes to Africa, possibly in the Peace Corps, and eventually
disappears. He was kidnapped or taken hostage. The book seems to have
quite a bit of political flavor to it, conveying how different two cultures
can be.
Does anyone have an idea of the title?
Thank you for sharing your infinite and collective wisdom.
Sincerely,
Amy Hynek
