Okay, I haven't read the King book, so I'm going out on a limb, but what about Orson Scott Card's ENCHANTMENT?
From the Amazon.com review:
Mixing magic and modernity, the acclaimed Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) has woven threads of history, religion, and myth together into a convincing, time-hopping tale that is part love story, part adventure. Enchantment's heroes, "Prince" Ivan and Princess Katerina, must deal with cross-cultural mores, ancient gods, treacherous kinsmen (and fianceés), and ultimately Baba Yaga herself.

I have a patron that just read the "best book she's ever read in her life"
(the Diary of Ellen Rimbauer) and she needs another one just like it.
Nothing like a little pressure! What the patron liked about the Diary of
Ellen Rimbauer was that she thought it was real until after she had read it
and that it incorporated elements of history, mystery, and a little romance.
Can you all recommend anything similar?
Thanks,

Shirley Jackson - HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
Richard Matheson - HELL HOUSE (this one doesn't have much romance but it's one heck of a haunted house story)
David Williams - SECOND SIGHT
Marilyn Harris - PORTENT. DIVINER. (maybe BLEDDING SORROW)
Nancy Thayer - SPIRIT LOST
Richard Matheson - BID TIME RETURN
Marlys Millhiser - THE MIRROR
Barbara Wood - CURSE THIS HOUSE (her first novel recently re-released in paperback)
Daphne DuMaurier - REBECCA. JAMAICA INN. MY COUSIN RACHEL. DON'T LOOK NOW.
Victoria Holt - mainly BRIDE OF PENDORRIC and MISTRESS OF MELLYN
Might also try V. C. Andrews' earlier books but some don't like b/c of dysfunctional family theme.
HTH and I'm sure I'll think of more as soon as I hit the Send button!

I know exactly what the appeal of that book is and it's one of those things that is hard to pinpoint (IMO), except it to say was a good, brooding, haunted house story. She probably wouldn't care for most of Stephen King's other titles (too gruesome) or some other authors such as Dean Koontz although you might try recommending WATCHERS. Based on my own preferences, I would probably suggest some of the following:
Shirley Jackson - HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
Richard Matheson - HELL HOUSE (this one doesn't have much romance but it's one heck of a haunted house story)
David Williams - SECOND SIGHT
Marilyn Harris - PORTENT. DIVINER. (maybe BLEDDING SORROW)

Hmmm, after rereading the post and thinking about this question, I'm not sure the elements that appealed to her are the same ones that appealed to me. Based on that, I would for sure recommend THE MIRROR, SECOND SIGHT, REBECCA, SPIRIT LOST, and BID TIME RETURN. Maybe the rest if she liked the supernatural aspects. :-)
