I read a book recently and want to recommend it to someone else. Of
course, I've forgotten title and author. If I'm remembering
correctly the plot is something like this: a prostitute moves to a
small English town. She is pregnant and already has a son who is
developmentally disabled. A young girl whose mom is a midwife is
very curious about her. The pregnant woman dies and there is some
scandal associated with that, possibly that the baby was cut from the
mother. The time period may be between 1400 and 1600. Does this
sound vaguely familiar to anyone? Thanks.
