For a number of years our school had a "Book in Common" program, in which
all students 9-12 and all faculty (and administrators) read the same book
each summer. We then discussed the book in classes; sometimes in Chapel;
sometimes had the author come and speak, etc. The books we read over the

I too am quite interested in knowing about publicity, but even more than
that, I'm wondering where you start? Obviously you have to get the support
of management in your library system--do you then go to City Hall? the
local newspaper?

Are there pitfalls you've learned from in the organizing of it? Advice

This is in response to Maureen O'Connor's query about publicity.

Among other things, I'm a publicist (for 2 chapter of Romance Writers of
America, as well as several romance and literary authors). However, I'm not
pitching myself here. <g>

Often I'm asked to come up with a group of writers for a library event. I've
done two of these things in the last couple of years, and both were very
successful. (Actually, they were both post-Valentine's Day events.) The
primary reason for that success is that the person in charge of PR for the
library system was wonderful! The library system I refer to is Baltimore
County Public Library. The person in charge of marketing (the dept that does
PR) is Kathy Coster. I suggest that you contact her, and see if she's
willing to share some ideas and insights. She certainly seems to have a
handle on getting BCPL events into the local newspapers!

interested in any information regarding the impetus for such city-wide or
state-wide reading programs,citations for research supporting their
implementation, statements of goals/objectives for the programs,discussions
surrounding why they are a good idea, i.e. background information, who
spearheaded the national initiative, what type of activities are planned
around the title read, etc. I am very interested in collective reading (it is
the focus of my doctoral research)and would love to be pointed to sources of
information about this particular manifestation of it.

book. My book group is reading that book this month. Does anyone have links
to good sites for background info and discussion ideas? I am reading the
book for the third time, the first time was probably about 20 years ago. I
am enjoying it so much, and am really looking forward to discussing it with

article entitled "Following Seattle’s Read:
Citywide Book Clubs Sprout Up Throughout the
U.S.", touching on how to select a book as well

Cincinnati is currently reading Ernest J. Gaines' A Lesson before Dying,
too, in a campaign called "On the Same Page Cincinnati," sponsored by
several local libraries, a newspaper, a bookstore, the local public
television station, the public school system, and the city. The impetus
for us was to foster a sense of community and bridge the racial divide

One thing I do know about this book is that the character Dill is based on
Truman Capote. Apparently, he visited his grandmother during the summer in
the town where Harper Lee lived and she knew him for many years. That is why
Harper Lee also assisted Capote in his research for writing "In cold blood,"
which is still one of the best true crime books ever written.
