St. Charles Public Library has a wonderful list. This can be found at:
http://www.st-charles.lib.il.us/low/artistsinfiction.htm
I think we might have recently had a similar discussion on this list..
If not, please email me privately. I have a very large list in word
format that I used for an Artists in Fiction brochure recently. It is
not compiled in a neat format but does have author, title, etc.

Looking for books with famous painters (or their paintings) as subjects,
such as: Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper, The Passion of Artemisia,
Girl with a Pearl Earring. Thanks very much for the help!

If you are willing to accept "part" of a book, one of my favorites is
Stanley Elkin's Van Gogh's room at Arles, a novella published in 1993 (with
two other novellas that don't have anything to do with art, as I recall)
Van Gogh's room... is the title story. I think that the book has the Van
Gogh painting on the cover, so it would look good in your display. Forgive
me if I'm wrong about this, I work in a library now that doesn't own it, so
I can't pull it from the shelves and confirm any of this. I just remember
that the novella made a big impression on me, and I even used it for a book
discussion.

There is also a mystery series featuring Leonardo as the "detective," though
I can't recall the author's name.

Leo Perutz's Leonardo's Judas - the U.S. edition was published in 1989 but
it's really an older book originally published in Germany. I don't think of
it as an "artist" book (although it truly is) because it is so
overwhelmingly about human frailty, faith and redemption. If you're lucky
enough to have it on shelf it belongs in this display.

The books may be those by George Herman
Carnival of saints
Comedy of murders
Tears of the Madonna
I don't know if he's written any others in the series - the last one was
published in 1996.

Right now, at the top of my "recommended fiction" are two books by Susan Vreeland which both feature art/artists/the art world: _Girl in Hyacinth Blue_ and _The Passion of Artemesia_.
Here are a couple links to libraries whose websites have lists of applicable titles:
http://www.webrary.org/rs/flbklists/Art.html
http://www.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/Novelapproach/art.htm
It would also be easy to use any of the larger readers advisory databases (such as Novelist, WDIRN, or Reader's Robot) and use a keyword of "art" to find other applicable titles.
