Greetings to all,

A patron recently read and enjoyed The Good German by Joseph Kanon, and
would like suggestions of other similiar books. She liked the time and
place, but you don't need to limit your suggestions to post WWII Germany.
She also was interested in the moral questions that the book raised about
what was going on during the war and people's responsibility. Again, don't
limit your suggestions to that time and place. She seems to like the idea of
books that raise moral issues and questions for the reader. I look forward
to seeing your suggestions. TIA

Library Journal's recent Reader's Shelf article (January 2002) dealt with
Moral Questions for Book Group Reads - the titles were:

Sweet Hereafter - Russell Banks
Last Orders - Graham Swift
Woman of the Inner Sea - Thomas Keneally
Wild Life - Molly Gloss
End of the Affair - Graham Greene
Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
Saskiad - Brian Hall

Joseph Kanon's first, Los Alamos, is terrific for
similar reasons.
Ward Just is a great author on these kind of
moral themes. His upcoming book is actually set
in postwar Europe, but A Dangerous Friend and
others are great. Which reminds me of Robert
Penn Warren's wonderful All the King's Men, a bit
dense, but a great political book.
Almost anything by Graham Greene would qualify,
including The Comedians, The Human Factor, The
Quiet American, Ministry of Fear, etc.
A lot of Le Carre's books also sound some pretty
deep issues, for example The Little Drummer Girl
slogs right into the Arab-Israeli conflict with
terrific complexity.
David Ignatius's Agents of Innocence. John
Banville's The Untouchable. A Flag for Sunrise,
by Robert Stone. Mother Night, by Kurt Vonnegut.
Joseph Conrad, even - The Secret Agent or Under
Western Eyes.

The recent additional title reminded me that I had never posted the compiled
list to the group. Thanks to all you shared their suggestions. The patron
was happy to have a new reading list to choose from.
