If it is not the Irene Hunt title, it might be Lackawanna by Chester
Aaron. I believe one of the boys was killed in that title (though I
don't remember anything about a circus, and naturally we don't have a
copy here). Another possibility is Tracks by
Clayton Bess (two brothers following the rails in the SouthWest).
Similar titles but with female protagonists are Nowhere to call home by
Cynthia DeFelice and The Coming Home Cafe by Gayle Pearson. (I was on a
Depression era YA reading jag a few years back).--
