We're looking for an adult novel read "several years ago" with a female
mystery writer as the protagonist. She returns to her hometown where
kids reenact her latest book and attempt to kill her.

Does anyone remember a book with this plot?

This comes from frustrated staff here who are not mystery readers - and
whenever they search for female or woman mystery writer or author all
that they have found are lists of books by female mystery writers!

If the book itself is classified as a mystery, then the main character
might show up on Bookbrowser's list of "sleuths by occupation". Here's
the link to the list of writer/detectives:

Of course this list might not include books classified as "mainstream",
"suspense", "horror", etc.

Could this be the Jolie Wyatt mysteries by Barbara
Burnett Smith? In the first one, Writers of the Purple
Sage, it describes her as being a relative newcomer.
Also, the murder is committed using the method
described in her novel in process. Meets some of the
criteria, anyway.
