building in a park. He then puts a sign on the building inviting people
to come in, which they warily do. Inside is a chair and a curtain with
a light on it. Several episodes follow in which people sit in the
chair, think over problems they are facing in their lives, and leave
with a resolution of the problem and a sense of peace. The reader never
learns what is behind the curtain. She is pretty sure that it is a
novel, not an essay, short story, etc. Can anyone identify this?
Thanks very much.

I have a patron looking for a novel she read 20 years ago. She thought
it was by Lloyd C. Douglas, but says it may be by another popular,
American, male author, and her best guess for author/period of the book
is mid-century or earlier. The plot is, a rich man moves to a small
town (possibly in Pennsylvania or the Midwest) and builds a white marble
building in a park.
